Thomas Ryou, MD, is a physician, mentor, and founder of the 1636 advisory. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College and received his doctorate from Stanford University. He completed his medical training in child health and development at Columbia University Medical Center, New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, UCLA Medical Center, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. His subsequent work as a physician in the U.S. and China gave him a unique understanding of pediatric medicine not just as a science but as a human experience — shaped by culture, economics, geography, and the trust between doctor and family. He has treated complex diseases in vulnerable populations — providing comfort to families in their worst moments, advising parents through high-stakes decisions, and helping their children reach their full potential.

Outside of patient care, Dr. Ryou has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to education and service. Early in his career, he co-founded Stanford University’s first Medical Mandarin course, helped homeless individuals in Boston receive health insurance, and mentored youths from underserved communities in East Palo Alto and Los Angeles. He has volunteered as an alumni interviewer for Harvard College applicants and served on admissions committees for postgraduate medical education at UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Beyond these roles, Dr. Ryou is a member of the Harvard Club of Boston, a historic alumni organization with a long tradition of supporting Boston-area students. Lastly, he is a member of the Harvard College Fund Associates Committee and a patron member of the Harvard Club of Hong Kong — reflecting his commitment to the next generation of students.
